You feel you must be rid of it* and so
you rid yourself of it and either you
painlessly forget it, just as soon as
it's rid of, and find it wasn’t truly
essential to possess it after all;
or tidily recall it, even though
it's rid of, and find it wasn’t truly
essential to possess it after all.

*What is it? It’s just as the weatherman
predicted: It’s wildfire spanning
the plains from the gilt edge to the very
beginning, sirening a grinding halt.
It’s your sex life, caving in and crushing
its own past with tart revisionism.

Could it have ever been enough? Yes. No.
But close enough one day out of every
and never-together still more ago:
The sore sport’s awareness-without-remorse
of the cold toilet seat (where he could shit,
for once, with the door shut and the dust motes
little snow in the modest sun, thinking:
To be there, crook of the Wife-Neck, breathing

that good Neck-Air must be a pleasant thing
to see and hear) suggests he assess the
loneliness of yet before now was new.
Till then we'll be dead once, perfect strangers;
the coming spring presaging the coming
End of spring, as we’ll claim we always knew.

Romeo: It’s my turn to cry. What if
your wife forgot your birthday – or your name
(for just one stunning moment, sure) or left
sharp knives point-upward in the dishwasher?

Juliet: It's someone to share secrets
with – or about – when we’d had none, only
history stored in his-and-hers junk drawers,
hoarded confessions for the counselor.

The Counselor: Perception of self weeps
for its normal imperfection and the
Bandaid stays damp. Marriage is extremely
realistic: Killing two white doves with
one precious stone bends full-blown fantasies
immoral, marshaling brave schemata.

Stratified abstracts: Revisionist stains
breathe out real-time teams of self-negating
black ants walking briskly, pausing often...

It'll feel good to get rid of some stuff
(those rumpled sketchbooks). Creating no art
will become my art; contention that my
shit don’t stink, the big promotion is not
worth finding in the first place I won’t look:
   A frozen marsh, a hard-edged cloud. Against
a deliberately wintry mix, dock lights
fashion an old coat when, upon ditching
the illusion, as real as any dream,
of progress, we all find out it’s better
to miss the boat by ten minutes than one.

I wasn’t scared, sitting on the sofa
together when the movie was over,
expecting to be more-or-less denied
(accept that it might not be, and it might,
except it won't), in the distant-siren
city-silence. No, I was terrified:
Was my victimhood not quite black-and-white?

“You get me but can't have me,” she stated,
“must earn it,” but sooner than I told her,
“I told you yesterday that yesterday
was long ago, and restaged kissings you
goodnight were dutifully belated
prayers,” she fell asleep. The very next
morning she’d aged ten years, beautifully.

She wore the same scarlet hairband each day
regardless of outfit, like a labcoat,
and I'd fallen, charmed by the chant of rote
recurrence I might've loved her despite,
the girl I'd see mornings but never talk
to, who'd then betrayed me with her boyfriend;
our scarlet potential rendered bone white.

Beautiful women in New York – don't they
all seem to head straight for you, like buses
the second you step down from the sidewalk?
I’d like my recurring bit part to end,
please, for the need grows increasingly dire
to weigh the sorrow of sex work versus
the monastic repression of desire.

I set the dial for nineteen eighty-
something; summer; my own sun-baked front yard.
Park in house-shadow, cricket-din, amongst
the “wheat” and Queen Anne’s lace back there, sneak in
the house, up the stairs; from Tom’s bed (Tom’s bed;
taboo even now [then]), watch my old self
watching for my older sister’s school (late
summer? early?) bus to heave its folding
door and drop her off, through the pine tree V.
And that's it. I sneak out of the window
(like i always wish i had [now(then)]), set
the dial for today, dinnertime-ish,
return to find the house dark, the table
cleared apart from one foil-covered dish.

In this realm of Maybe, the barbed current
of your wise, unspeakable feelings tied
double knots which later sometimes weren’t;
a list of shames constructed with pre-war
sentiment, but you could hear a pin drop
if you pressed pretenses against the door
to self esteem. Keep digging or propose
a new hole; start the day or a new dream
dishonest in the honesty you chose.
Salt and smoke; dogged lines on the newly
middle aged evoke red fog. What succeeds
the final last straw? More straws, skating
free as fat teardrops, generating
the self-continuance of awful deeds?

At last, Grandpa’s least favorite; at best
my best friend’s eighth best friend. Now myriad
impossible ways to be loved suggest
like ways to be impossibly hated.

I can’t be replaced if I don’t admit
you’re gone. Somewhere between am too concerned
and don't give a shit, this dogeared friendship
ran away from home (and never returned).

We hadn't spoken in so long, I think
we stopped knowing each other. It reminds
me of the favorite shirt that I don't
wear anymore, to keep a teensy tear
a teensy tear, and of Grandpa’s cufflinks,
I was afraid I'd lose so hid somewhere.

Let me say aloud what's best left unsaid.
One sentence to destroy you (and leave me
better off dead...) else prove myself insane.
Or not. Toughness doesn’t come from taking
one's coffee black. No, that raised rash begins
within, surfaces in stock reaction
like the rainy day wiggle-worm. Beastly,
yes, but beasts wrong sinlessly. The green glass
battle, just a dream; arguing how tall
is a leprechaun with a leprechaun,
and waking to new blood stains. Vagary’s
weak currency and only a “did you
get my text?” text bought me time to contain
the outburst – I’M SORRY I YELLED AT YOU!!!

“I've never been in a kayak,” I said
before I (drunk) got in one and pushed off
behind my brother-in-law, Matt, paddled
in the dark to the riderless jet ski
drifting out in the middle of the lake,
prepared to find someone floating near it,
facedown, or blood on the seat or, at least,
keys still hanging from the ignition but,
years later, I recalled that, years before
I already had been in a kayak
on my bicycle trip, in Idaho...
Anyhow, there was no body or blood;
most likely the jet ski wasn't tied up
and had just drifted away from its dock.

Around the boulder I spied the day’s bare
conclusion, pink; stepped right in a tide pool
and threw my hands to the slippy granite
hoping to find yours among the many.
Screw falling down; unite raincoat plastered
with red leaves. It's a new way to be fine:
Trees will lean down later to pat our hair.

Peaches yolk yellow flushed with giddy wine
looked good enough to eat, were all bone-hard.
We picked just to have picked, earn an opal
of work sweat and kick back in the Airstream.
“I made you a refreshing drink,” Penny
hands me a glass and says. “Guess what's in it...
orange juice, milk, and vanilla ice cream.”

Lost in time only steps from his home, doomed
to wait forever, first in friendless line
for that hot lunch, free CD; only these
small round Band-Aids to help him feel alone
through the dry-eyed dream of return. Rightly,
the connective tissue of collective
concern and hand-me-down fraternity
curled up like blueprints; smiles in service
of propped bonds reached imaginary heights
and relaxed into grimaces nightly.
Doomed. In the shade of a kitchen table
littered with bills he makes wishes on a
round-tipped star, when he’s drunk enough to care
or there's no such thing as a time machine.

The bead necklace lay coiled in its box,
wasted gift, while the cutting board softened.
It was a sort of sport, no? The way we
volleyed optimism? Shucks. In the end
we shared our meals unwilling when in lieu
of ambulant wishes, empty dishes
might have been more filling. Take back your key;
save me, I cling as lichen to these rocks.

What will it take to lid this belching stew?
Daunting familiarity; to’ve met
before we’ve ever met and to carry
my name like the tied stem of a cherry.
No more watch the red sun’s broad amulet
deck low fruit I’d striven for from ditches.

I writhed behind tableaux of tangential
friends I'd abruptly never see again
now the vector’d been withdrawn. Sequential
loose ends, swallowed links of the anchor’s chain,
strobed shade beneath the helicopter’s fan.

I tried not to feel so devastated,
burrowed into specious bliss but, oddly,
I was thriving in unexpected ways:
   Notions of kinship badly outdated
were let to recede downstream and replaced
   as Expectation, that ghoulish con-man,
coughed out his lungs like a foreign body
and drowned in a crock of horseshit as wide
as the ocean, a noble suicide.
